Hey folks,
We all know the famous UK cycling routes—North Coast 500, C2C, Hebridean Way, Camel Trail, and so on. But sometimes the best rides aren’t the ones you plan—they’re the little unexpected gems you stumble across when you take a wrong turn, follow a tiny brown sign, or decide to see where that gravel path behind the pub actually goes.
So I thought it’d be cool to start a thread where we share the most underrated or accidental routes we’ve discovered.
One of mine was in Wiltshire. I was trying to avoid a busy road, ended up turning too early, and suddenly found myself rolling through a quiet narrow lane lined with autumn trees, leading to a ridge with one of the best views I’ve ever seen of the Vale of Pewsey. Not marked on any cycling site. Just pure luck. Used cars for sale in kenya
A friend of mine rode into Scotland last summer, missed a turn near Pitlochry, and ended up on a forest service road that climbed gently for miles. It opened onto a loch with complete silence except for wind and birds. No cars, no tourists, no signage—just a perfect, accidental route.
I bet loads of you have similar stories: hidden canals, quiet coastal tracks, unknown bridleways, dead-end farm lanes that actually aren’t dead ends, or small market towns with incredible scenery just beyond the main road.
What I’d love to hear is:
Where was the route?
How did you find it (wrong turn, GPS glitch, exploring, etc.)?
What made it underrated—scenery, low traffic, smooth surface, wildlife, climbs?
Would you recommend it to others, or is it better kept secret? |
